Whats the best salt to use for a reef tank?:grouphug:
Is there a diffrence I use Oceanic Sat Mix I have been with that salt from when I have first started, I would get the 5gal mix bag, It was easy one bag per 5 gal bucket, Its harder to get the 5gal mix I think they dont make it any more in that size?

Is there a better salt for reefs or is salt just salt with a fancy packaging,

If one is better what makes it better, There is not much of a big diffrence in price. what kind is everyone useing and why!

Also any know if any LFS have the Oceanic Sat Mix in 5gal bag?

thanks:grouphug:

There are a few threads on here about this already, But ESV is the most used salt now on here I believe. I Have been using it since August and my corals have never looked better and the levels are always constant.

There is a bunch of threads here that have polls on which salts everyone uses and why. Do a quick search because there is plenty here.

Buying 5g mix bags from oceanic gets expensive compared to what you would spend for a bucket of salt mix. If you can fit 1 5g bucket in your house I would buy that and use it through the year. Or get the 55or 100g mix buckets.

Oceanic is one of the worst thats why its so cheap and I have heard many reports of algae problems.I don't know much about the ESV products except they are hard to get and there are many more mainstream products that are the same or better. The best salt out there by far head and shoulders above the rest is Tropic Marin Reef Pro the guys who use this swear by it and won't switch from it. But definitely get off the Oceanic quick!!

Not sure where you are shopping but I have had no issues finding the ESV salt (and their other great products) at most of the better LFS's.

Also most of our vendors carry the ESV salt and a lot of them also deliver :)

..I guess that's a +1 from me on ESV :)

I switched over to ESV from Tropic Marin Reef Pro, The ESV is a superior product.

I used TMPR for years until I checked Params.
Alk. 5-6
Mag 900
Cal 420
Phosphates wre also high. I do not remember the #
on two different batches.
However. It does mix crystal clear in about 10 minutes.

+1 for esv. I'm with Kathy, I have no problem getting esv either. Try the MR vendors. I also like the levels, I find myself not dosing mag and cal anymore just alk plus it mixes up quickly and and can be used in 1 hour after mixing as Walnuts indicated.
