dude when u do a water change unless ur sump is ridiculously filthy to begin with, ur show tank should never cloud up. how do u have ur sump set up?! something id deff. wrong here

Not sure which dude you are referring to but from time to time, during a water change I use a powerhead to blow crap off my rocks. It will then go down the overflow and the socks will catch it.

hehe I hear ya. Well all I've done is run the just water cycle before(a quick one) then the hot cycle with bleach then another just water with the socks in it. Has worked fine for me.

I do something similiar but I use the Laundromat once a month for the first wash which consists of 12 socks, a cup of bleach and HOt water chosen on the cycle. I then take them out after and run them two times thru my home washing machine at this point it is just washing the residual bleach that may be left in the socks. All the nasty crap is left at the laundromat washing machine.....:)

ROFL... That's a good idea... never thought about what comes out of our socks. Asterina, worms, pods...

It's been almost 2 months since I removed the filter socks and let me tell you, the Copepod, Amphipod and whatever pods that I can't identify population has exploded. It almost looks like an infestation. Also, my cyano problem has completely disappeared. Two things I figured, either it's because I added a DI stage to my Kold Steril and/or I don't have a nitrate factory festering in the filter socks even though I was changing them out every two/three days (was using the washer machine method). They would get brown pretty darn quick even though I was feeding lightly and doing regular water changes. I admit there was some times that I forgot to change them out and 4 or 5 days would pass by the time I remembered. Since the pods were not getting trapped by the filter socks, I guess they had a chance to live longer and had a chance to reproduce. My Cheato also has gotten pretty big too and there is a metropolis of pods taking refuge in it. I would like to get a Mandarin Goby now that I have an abundant food source for it but I still have cold feet. Looks like I will be running my system without filter socks.
