even in the past 2 years things have changed dramatically. I can't wait to see what happens in the next 10 years

yeah, sigh. thats what makes me so indecisive about lighting, skimmer choices these days.

its like televisions.... i got a 50" plasma, now i wish i had a simpler, smaller lcd... ughh.

Hahahaha Oh man, that was my first Salt Water setup. A skilter and a reverse flow undergravel filter on a 20H. WHat a piece of junk that was. hahaha
I'm more interested to see what we're doing wrong. Like with Bio Balls. In 10 years we'll be saying "You can't have more then 5x your total tank volume turned over in an hour" -> I doubt it but I know there will be something that flys in the face of what "we now know".

It sound to me 10 years ago you were getting bad advice
the knowledge was out back then to I was using tunze skimmers
oceanic skimmers
sanders skimmers
ETS and MTC were around back then as well

live rock, live sand Berlin methods
deep sand beds and bare bottom set ups

the same M.H. units from back then are still being sold today. I remember 10k lighting no 20k or 14k

15 or 20 years ago was a different story.

I used to read marine fish monthly mag....seemed that everyone was against a skimmer. I actually still have old issues that I was recently looking through. MAN! does that advice really suck. Their TOTM's look worse than some of our refugiums :)

it came to mind because while i am setting up the 26 gal nano (or future QT) i remember how i mod'd the skilter into a refugium+airstone skimmer+heater compartment, including algae with a home depot PC light over it and little things (copepods?) that would multiply fast and feed the mandarinfish all for less than $50.

want to do the same thing in back of the 26 gal, lol not a skilter, but a HOT refugium that has a built in skimmer and space for heater.

oh i am seriously reluctant to hang that 50" plasma on the wall for if i do then when moving time in a yr it means patching and all that... plus it weighs 80lbs. heck maybe i will offer it up for trade on MR, or buy the legs/stand. i got a 17" lcd tv in each room, love the comparable minimalizm! (unfortunately, theres no such thing in reefkeeping.:grumpy: )

The wonderful old days ug undergravel filters and standard fluorecent lighting. The decoration was dead bleached coral which turned green and brown. I did love that fish only with algae tank. Nowadays you would get crucified for having that setup.

The skilter was high tech man and the seaclone was the cool thing to have at one point. HA HA HA

wow I guess I'm just from a different school or train of thought.

the skilter was crap even when it first came out.

My first reef was a 55 gallon with 4 fluorescent with a huge sanders air driven skimmer. The thing I miss the most was the 120lbs of Hawaiian live rock. Oh yeah Bare bottom. I kept lots of lps and mushrooms back then. This was back in 1988

the mod'd skilter worked only relatively better than the air driven Amiricle in my experience. plus the amiricle was so tall and sump-only and did hardly anything. i took the wood airstones from the amiricle and rigged it into the skimmer venturi. i was around 15yo then and couldn't afford to "try" yet another skimmer so i guess i made do for quite a while back then.

flash to the present, now im looking for a refugium with a bi skimmer and space for heater and its like $400-$500 for some acrylic and a pc light?

oh wait, that one doesnt even hav a skimmer but its $435 :( lol overpricing is always an issue in our fishy hobby but we are so good at pretending we're oblivious or maybe we are just rich new yawkers
