Linckias are reef safe (they mainly feed on microfauna and detritus), so it was just probably feeding on whatever might be growing on the shell. As for snails, I don't believe they produce the enzymes to effectively break down something of that size. They've also been known to eat sponges, so unless you have some brightly colored sponges that you want to keep, you should be fine, The main species you have to worry about with snails is chocolate chip stars, but most people only keep them to feed harleys, so they don't really have time to prey on snails.
