im sure theres plenty of people out there(in this rough economy)where money is tight and alot of people are taking the easy road of making a rock landscape.....so i'd figure i would give my personal opinion.
to start i used ballons for caves
secondly portland concrete
third beach sand(just thinking on the wallet )
and most importantly(being that your at the beach anyway and its free)i look on the beach for as many shells as possible.....trust me there are reason behind this
as far as the shells i crushed them pretty small and add them to the mixture of one part concrete on part crushed shells 2 parts sand.
the reason for the shells and the beach sand is it acts as a buffer which will cut the curing time to less.most people that keep ponds use crushed oyster shells to lower the ph,if you do the research on google.i also used pvc pipe as support for the over hangings i made to each there own creativity goes a long way in ones mind.as far as curing them i had a canister filter filled with whatever crushed shells i had left and put all the rock i made in a garbage can with water changes every week for about 3-4 weeks and the ph stabilized to the point i could use it in the tank.also the benifit of using the crushed shells is it gives that natural look to the rock as well as lighten the color of it aswell so your not ending up with rock that looks like the color of concrete.my next batch i do ill post pictures.
home depot sell a 94 pound bag of portland concrete for 9.99 that like almost 300 pounds of rock you can make for 10 bucks.
