Well, you can always buy Nitrate/Phosphate/Iron test kits.

the truth is, if we can convince enough people if this, you can probably start bottling your skimmate and sell it as a coral booster.

Great thread, Thanks Shaun. A friend in Bklyn also has great SPS growth in his 180, no skimmer and uses a tap water purifier from aquatic pharmaceuticals.

must be that even the corals in brooklyn are tough. what can we say, we're not pushovers and we wont let a couple of phosphate ions get in our way.
i wonder if any non-brooklyn tanks can do that too... he he.

I am not a fan of natural setups and SPS. From what I have seen DSB systems with refugium filtration is not very effective at nutrient removal/absorption for a normally stocked reef. From the local reefs I have seen that rely on natural filtration, not one of them have a clean look. Now, there are different levels of clean. By "clean" I mean algae free rock, no cyano on the sandbed, and glass that is not covered with green turf algae.
There are exceptions to a "clean" natural system but the owners of these systems have very little or no fish, and or perform a ridiculous amount of water changes.
The most effective form of nutrient removal is skimming. By not skimming or underskimming you are only setting yourself up for a mess that you will have to clean up with a PO4 remover, large water changes, and manual plucking

There are many different SPS that will color under different nutrient levels. Montis seem to keep nice color in almost any condition, but for those of you non skimmer guys try a table acro, or a humilis, or any thick branched acro. The main color of this coral will most likely be brown in a "natural" system.

I'm just typing from what I have experienced or witnessed......no speculation here
