money dont matter when it comes to dat.Lolz.. as long as it looks really nice.... what i think....

i hear ya tony. the difference in opinions should be interesting.

sigh. i guess i'm real cheap, i wouldnt spend more than $50 on a single live item.

so i guess my endeavors to get a purple tang or regal angel are on hold for a while unless they go on a deep sale somewheres.

i'll be stocking my humble barely reef tank with like chromis and other cheaper fish and virtually no corals except a few polyps or shrooms.

$800 on a griffithii (I had it 7 years ago)
I would spend a lot of money on a Conspiculatus angel, Crysurus Angel, or some other rare fish that has a history of living in an aquarium. Some fish demand a high price.

cool, i just might be checking with you later on purple tang priceys but only after my tank is cycled and the lr that is still needs 1-2 wks cooking is in.

on a regal angel i know my tank is too small anyway (45g) but i'm sure i will move up to a bigger tank in a couple yrs inshallah.

regal angels are somehow my most favorite fish in the world.

deep, since you are a jobber, its interesting to know what fish you keep for yourself. do you have anything rare or exotic (= expensive, lol) that you are holding onto? thats the cool thing about jobbers they come across good deals on some rare stuff, no? heard stories about mislabelled stuff at wholesalers and the like :D

grimreefer, I don't think you can classify Deep as a "jobber". Jobber is someone who physically goes to the wholesalers and pick out fish for their distant LFS customers. Their line of business exist because the wholesalers are notorious for sending LFS stuff they did not order nor can sale in their market, some of them not even good live stock.

Ronen is like a low budget version of the LFS, kinda like a southwest airline of the LFS.

I would wait till people get rid of their fish and sell them cheap on MR. I'm just that cheap!! Plus they have a history of living and eating unlike online order or LFS bought where you hope the fish doesnt get sick or die.

So anyone looking to get rid of true percs(mated), sixline, etc pm me :lol_large

good idea! MR and C'sList rock :)

i do have the patience now. i totally believe too that fish you buy from a fellow reefer's tank is less likely to get ill than one from a lfs, especially imported stock.

cali, now surely deep is BETTER than a "Budget Pet Shop" ? i mean budget wreaks of low end or grey market, kind of like Woolwoorth Pets in the basement.

jobbers exist among these other common pet business classifications:

breeder or collector

importer/exporter

wholesaler/distributor

jobber/broker

retailer/lfs

jobbers do some level of brokering (agency) whether its for a chain or retailers or a chain of hobbyists <---
ie "i canget it for you" whether its for lfs or hobbyist.

what was the better word to use? LFS? Retailer? the other threads crticising them indicate otherwise. ...

"Home-based aquarium shop"? "Aquarium Specialist"??? you tell me, then. it would be great to see it in the signature if often offers non-trade type sales across MR discussion threads.

Deep has the coral connection, if anyone has a fish connection please share. you could make money too. then we would probably have to change the name to Manhattan Reefs and Fish forums :lol_large

What are you looking for?

I give deals to MR

If you guys want to do a group buy I could give you even better savings

As glipper69 said on a different thread "business has three variables Price, quality and service, the rule is you can only provide 2 of them at any given time. choose the 2 and live with it. "

I hope you are not trying to explain the in and outs of the fish importing business to me, I don't know everything about the industry but I do have a few friends that works as jobber in LA area. Ronen is not a jobber(as I know it) and he is as close to a LFS\retailer as one can be in your chain of aquarium trades, unless he is flying out to LAX every Sunday night to hand pick the live goods and bring them back for sale. I believe he is ordering off a list with the wholesaler(s) and hope to get exactly what he ordered when he opens the boxes, a jobber would ensure him he is getting the best specimen in addition to getting the items and quantity he ordered.

What is wrong with a low budget retail operation model? he gets the inventory specific to the MR members current requirement and sells them quickly without the expense of holding them and advertisement. No complex mark up formulas of added labor cost, store rental, insurance, etc. like a true LFS would.

ronen realy has no overhead so he can selll us amazing pieces at close out prices with no issues. His only minus is he will not get walkins. IMO the best way to think of ronen is as a friend doing this trade and forum a favor which he realy recieves no "real" monitary rewards at this point so enjoy deepwater while you can. If he decides to get a retail location things will change very quickly. Rent is the number one killer for all small businesses.

well -od bless ronen regardless, i do not want to specifically critique someone i haven't yet had the pleasure to meet. he's obviously doing a good service to MR members, hats off.

but look at the contrast between the two explanations above. one is sayin rones is very close to being a lfs. the other sayin he has no overhead nor real monetary profit. hello rones are you independently rich or something that you're not doing this for profit? lol

regarding jobbers, i see you are restricting the term to simply employees of lfs that "physically" run to pick out the goods at the wholesaler... oh well.

most of the LFS SW stuff comes right off the wholesalers lists, ordered by the lfs him/herself.

my point was that rones may be functioning as a "jobber" for MR members (nothing wrong with that!), as exemplified by the statement that he can get it for you but you must pick it up the same day, and so on.
