Hey guys, my deltec skimmer came in on Friday. . .with a major crack! I was so pissed since I shipped out my current skimmer because someone had bought it.

So basically I am going to be skimmerless for a little over a weeks time max. The earliest I might get my replacement skimmer will be this Friday, which I will then install on Saturday. I have a 90 gallon with a 20 gallon sump and 10 gallon refugium.

What I am worried about are my tangs, since I know that they require a lot of oxygen. Also my angel, which so far has been doing great. I havent had much success with any angle besides the Regal that I have now. Im hoping that the 160lbs. of live rock in my tank and about a 23x turnover rate can hold the tank over for about 10 days.

Should I take anything else into consideration?
Thanks!

Jawwad if you're worried about oxygen you can incres surface agitation in the main tank. You will be fine for a short time with no skimmer

One step ahead of ya, I already have my return pointing close to the surface, and have my seio also pointing a little closer to the surface.

maybe this would be a nice time to up your flow, always a plus especially for tangs, they love swimming against the current, not to mention keeping the water less stagnant

J,

Tangs, especially yellows, will have a faded look when they "wake up" and it can take some time to come back - so, if the fish just "woke up" they need time to color up.

I doubt the tangs would be dying just from not having a skimmer or losing some agitation - I have seen them kept in tanks with very little, and sometimes close to no flow.

Also waiting on my Deltec order

Skimmerless for two months now.
500 gallon system with refugium no problems. The system doesn't have a lot of fish in it yet but has a good amount of corals for a two month old system. It hasn't affected the animals yet. I probably wont have a skimmer for another month or so but I'm not scared. Haven't done a water change yet on the system.

Maxpower had a really nice tank skimmerless for a a long time, got published and everything. 24/7 lighting on fuge plus lots of carbon would be beneficial when i asked him how he did it.

why would you want to handlecap yourself like that, skimmerless gives you high amount of dissolved organics, and also you will be relying on macros, which also have a byproduct which isnt just Co2. you will go through A sexual phases as well as leading to lower amount of iron in your system, with low iron your macro will not grow that quick, because macros uses iron. the byproduct of macro algae is toxins, depends on which type of macro algae i do not know if it's worth it. the only skimmerless system i would use is a cryptic sump which uses high amount of cryptic sponges. skimmerless is a very bad idea and everyone should agree with me on this one.

personally while i recognize the keeping a small piece of the ocean in such a confined space is in itself "un natural" my ultimate goal in this hobby is to produce a thriving reef with as little un natural elements and power suage as possible. ie sans skimmer. i dont think its nuts, but something we should be striving for.

What kind of low power usage lighting do you plan to use on this reef? Natural sunlight? How about replicating natural water movement? No pumps? Why choose the skimmer in your decision to go "natural" when there's plenty other artificial items on most reef tanks?
