Sorry if this is in the wrong forum as I'm new, and this isn't a tank thread as of now. I'm planning on upgrading to a 300 gallon DD tank. I want to run 2 separate sumps instead of one large sump. The stand dimensions will be slightly shy of 72"L x 36"W x 30"H. Would 2 40 breeders be enough you think? Or should I go with maybe two 50 gallon tanks. I want one as an equipment sump and one as a fuge sump. With the returns going to the opposite side of where the overflow it came into is.

I wanted to do 2 different sumps. For several reasons, some that might make sense some that might not. For starters If I had to shut down a sump for some reason one would still be running. Another is to make sure the water is getting across the tank completely, I know that may sound strange and there are MP's and other powerheads for this purpose. And also I wanted to try and keep a lot of space inside the stand, so if I could turn the sumps sideways instead of length ways I would have a nice chunk of open room. And the 300 stand from marineland has sliding doors on the sides as well so I could access the entire sump if need be.

You should find out exactly what the interior dimensions of the stand are. Most times when a manufacturer lists the stand dimensions they are the exterior dimensions. You lose "x" amount of space inside the stand depending on the thickness of wood used to build it. Therefore, while the stand may be 72"x36", the footprint inside the stand will be smaller. At the end of the day you may not be able to fit a breeder tank width wise in the stand, or two length wise for that matter.

Yea, I think it is actually 35"'s wide inside, so i might need custom made acrylic sumps that would hold around 100 gallons I guess.

Are these sumps going to work independently??

Just curious because if one return pump fails the other sump's return will continue to pump water back into the main tank causing your non working sump to overflow

Just saying because I am in the same boat as you.

I have had my 150 gallon tank up and running for 2 years now and I want a bigger sump.

I have a 30 gallon under there now. I cannot fit anything larger unless I take a piece of wood out of my stand which I don't feel like going considering it is holding my display.

So what I did was buy another 20 gallon tank and a diamond bit and some bulkheads and I am going to plumb them together. So if my return pump fails I will have no mess!

I was planning on running them separately, but also coming up with some kind of safety fail switch. Like the ATO's use that could cut power. But maybe one large sump would work better.
