well that all depends on the rules of the grow out.....if the person growin it out wants to make the group feel more comfort he will then be willing to pay everybody back for there part of the share.....but if not then the group will be running a low risk of loseing there cash....but come on everybody on mr loves this hobby and we are always on top of our tanks.what are the chances of a tank crash really rare i'd say....

I don't believe there are any rules against it, but what happens after the 1 person growing it out accidentally has a tank crash?

With any growout your taking a risk, that is why it is very important to pick a good canidate with experiance and a mature tank for the growout..

Ineed, this is a fairly greatntopic in my opinion. It's hard enough paying for 1 frag of something let alone a whole pack deal. I think the risk between a couple people to get at least half the frags per say at a reasonable price in the case that some may not make it for what ever reason. Reason being some grow slower , are harder to frag ect ..

The purchase of the coral will fall under the group buy/shared shipping rules and the grow out should fall under the dbtc forum.

really? plenty of people on here of varying experience levels have had tank crashes (myself included). It doesn't matter how experienced you are or how much you love your tank when a piece of equipment fails while you're at work or something dies and nukes the tank.

Seems like more of a liability than it could be worth, especially with frags and not so much so with colonies.

Also, IMO, the slow growth rates of some corals would seemingly made the yields not worth the wait.

So what you're saying is, if 10 people chip in for a 1" frag thats valued at $100, the grower would have to grow it until its a colony so its about 10x the size in about 2 years, at that point, the grower would frag it up so s/he would be back with a 1" frag all over again? And if that 1" frag dies on the grower, s/he owe everybody their money back.

Seems like an awful deal for the grower. It would be much better for the grower to just buy that $100 frag, grow it out, and sell each frag for $50 each (making a profit of $450, and reducing the costs for fellow members at the same time) The grower incurs no additional liability then he already would have had. Things like this happen already btw.

and no one expects a tank crash trust me, never thought it would happen to me, but did. and if i did do something like thing it would have to be grown in a mature tank that has been up along time. and someone who isnt switching equiptment ect around all the time, i feel pretty confident in my coral skills but would not want to be a grower in something like this, now i have been given frags as back up's from other members,

and on a side note alot of the supposed high end zoa's are easy melters, so you could grow them out only to frag and have them melt off

There has been a good amount of succesful growouts.. check out R2R on the progress and completion of a few of them....

Here is a good EXAMPLE of a growout..

My Miami valued at $1,000 an eye, 4 people go in with $250 each, takes aprox 6months for the 4 eyes to grow, cut and share! Now you all have a coral valued at around $1000 for $250 all for your patience...

With higher end corals it CAN be worth while!
