My 46G bowfront looks beautiful so far (just established within last couple of months). The sand bed is CaribSea Aragamax oolite (the super-fine sugar sand stuff) but since I have a Vortec "through the glass" circulator and a Deep Blue Triton 4 1050GPH return pump the oolite tends to get blown around a little. Despite the fact that it looks beautiful as a sand bed, I am regretting it a little.

I have considered covering the oolite with something a little coarser so as to tamp-down the sand from blowing around all over the place. Is this safe? I have heard a few negative things about doing this that don't really make sense to me, something about packing down the finer stuff excessively. What do the "experts" say :)

Thanks
John

I guess it would depend on how much you're putting on it and how much sand you currently have. if you're just going to spread a layer just enough to cover it I don't see what that would do. I mean what difference would it make if you just used coarser sand from the beginning? You may just get some cloudy water from introducing the new sand.
