Hehe. Yea, it's great!

I got a medium flat rate box from post office today and it fit the 2L bottle as well, but it cost $10.95 to ship priority flat rate for this size.

I just weighted the bottles. The 500ml with the box weight 2 lb, while the 2L with the box weight 6 lb. UPS charge about $15 for 2lb.

I'm going to keep looking and see if any other cheaper way.

I would be interested in starting my own little culture. Would you be up for shipping a smaller starter culture to me? It seems like that would be a MUCH easier way to do this. I would just need a week or so to get the ferts and the bottles set up.

LOL, I think you just answered me with your post above me there....

How about ziplock bags or shipping bags? Fish get shipped from Hawaii and they live. This is only phyto? Double bagged would fit in a small USPS contain much easier. We can clean out our own bottle at home???? I would take a chance on something double bagged.

Yes, you can just rinse some soda bottle at home a few times and use some RO water to rinse it again in case your tap water has chlorine in there.

I thought about using double ziplock bags as well, and the shipping will be $5 instead of $6. One of the draw backs is that there will be no insulation between the bags and outside. Temperature swing will be immediate to the surrounding temperature. Also, if they stack something on the box or clip the box a bit, it'll leak. If you prefer it that way, I can ship it to you that way. I just cannot guarantee if it got crushed and got the plastic bags leaking.

I ordered some of the ferts you recommended in your other thread and I will get some soda bottles tomorrow so once you get your cultures back to strength let me know. I wouldn't need a whole bottle but if that's easiest for you I will do that. Just need enough to get myself going. Thanks for doing this as well as the other thread on how to do a culture. I can't wait to start feeding my pods and DT!

You are welcome. If your goal is to have your own culture, do not use any of the starter culture for feeding. I would suggest get a minimum of 1L phyto and split them into 2 bottles, and start 2 culture right away. By (roughly) 10 days, you can split the 2 bottles again to make 4 bottles. And so on.

If you are getting a 2L phyto, make it a 3/4 and 1/4 split. The 3/4 split will be ready again in 3-5 days, while the 1/4 split will be ready in roughly 7-10 days. Whenever they are ready, do another 3/4 and 1/4 split. The reason of 3/4 split is like you change water for fish tank, you don't want it to have pH, salinity, and temperature shock. The survival rate of the 3/4 split is extremely high. Ever there are contamination, the mass amount of the source culture can easily win out.

The reason to start more culture sooner is that since you are new, the chance of contamination is high and quality control is always poor. Crashing the culture (for whatever reason) would be quite common. Get more bottles going to increase your success rate.

Sounds like a plan! I will follow that suggestion once I get them running. I'm going to have to drink a lot of soda!! I'm thinking I will just start with 2 bottles. I'm not breeding fish or anything and will pretty much be using it as a food in my DT so I figure 2 bottles should pretty much keep it going. Maybe a 3rd to have as a control in case one or both of the other cultures crash.
