Have you ever really sat down and looked at your tank and realize how much money has been put into your system? and then have that little slight quick thought of how nice that would be right now to have that in your pocket again to take care of alot of bills or whatever? i just pulled up a chair and sat and looked at my system for about a half hour or so, moved some things around in the tank, then pulled out a piece of paper and wrote down how much i paid for everything and after i typed it all into a calculator and clicked equals... i almost passed out. lol. my jaw dropped. maybe its just me and im having one of those days, but... when times are rough, you have to do what you have to do to live on, and as much as i dont think id ever be able to get up and leave the hobby, it would be nice to see some of that money again.

i would just feel so guilty to get rid of my fish not knowing who is taking them because it feel like i have owned them forever and they are family. for instance, my clowns, i have had for about 5 years now. had them in a 55g, then a 72g, then a 29g, then a 46g and now my 57g. they are worth what...10 bucks each? i have such a sentimental bond with them that i feel like i would want a 100 at least for each lol. and my green star polyps... oh god... they are only green star polyps that i got as a frag with 3-6 heads on it from MA for 10 bucks and they were the brightest star polyps i have ever seen. now i have over 500 heads and its bigger then my fist. i feel like its worth 500 bucks...and id be lucky to get probably $40 tops. its crazy...

anyone have a bond like that with their tank? or am i just crazy...

I never think of that and never will! I want the tank, the fish the corals, not the money! for if I did want the money I would fill the tank with it or house it in a Fort like the one of scrooge mcduck and swimm in it

I do not want this:

Just wait until you have children!! Try raising them for 18-21 years on a budget! Without college it's probably $250,000 per kid. Ok, just saying............. :banghead:

Russ

I am doing that already ... no worries ... even if the the stock market crashes ;)

For mine the first tank was a salt water nano made with left overs I had from previous tanks :) ... of course Nemo was there and so was Marlin ... then followed Dory and then they became to big ... so upgrade ... ;) ... now its Saxophone classes and a fresh water tank due to "lack of time"...to busy these kids.

Sure would be nice to have all that dough in my hand but doubt if I never got into hobby I would have that money saved proably just spent on something else ! My tank proably has 5k give or take invested and 5k is not gonna make or break me and As a grownup now my tank is my fun time it's my escape from stress, worries and it makes me happy !! Something that keeps stress down and makes u happy is worth the $ IMO

I don't look at the money side either, 17 years in the Reef side of the hobby alone im sure a lot of money has been spent. As well as my other hobby with cars and racing them or what ever. The smile on my face feels better than money sitting in the bank. I see it this way as long as im paying all the bills and putting money away for the future, im gonna spend my extra money and enjoy myself.

I would never get rid of this hobby. Yes i did a calculated guess on how much money went into this hobby, and like you ryan, i almost passed out. My reef tank is my escape from reality and the wife and kids too.

Keep on reefing !

lmao

That's why we frag..get some of our money back. Like me I'm about to move and I could use some money for that but I have gorgeous colonies I'd rather sell as a whole thing because I don't want to chop them up. Sometimes you just have to part with stuff.

Ohh trust me, I would not be either...if I were older and had a decent job and had a settled down life. And by all means, I don't think I'll ever fully leave the hobby, but since not many people ACTUALLY know alot about me, let's say, rethink what I said, and picture yourself being 23 and working 19 hours a week, minimum wage, in debt, been searching for a new career for several months.....and just realize your tank has around 8 grand into total value new. That's only why I thought it. But more of the sentimental value of having all my fish and corals for so long, I don't even know how I would be able to! They are like my kids haha.

And russ, thanks, but I have to go change my shorts now.

Jerl...I love it haha

Yeah I've thought about the same too. Ever since I bought my first tank in freshwater all the way up to here, I've spent A LOT of money.

Even when I buy reef related things, I really think about it, "Is the money worth it"?
I always try to find the cheapest things possible to try to keep myself from spending so much but its really hard.

I'm in so much debt right now that I won't be able to pay off until I bet many, many years after I leave college. This really makes me think, hmm am I wasting money right now on this?

It's either I stay in this hobby and regret that I spent so MUCH money on this hobby, or quit, save money and spend on bills. But in the future I might regret that I never got to the point of perfection with my reef. Ya know, money can't buy experiences. Money will always come and go, but time only goes one way. So I'll stick with the hobby for now.

When I feel that I've done all that I can to make the best looking reef possible, then I might consider breaking down my tank.....

AND START ANOTHER BIGGER ONE!

I went thru different hobbies thru out my life, RC cars, helis, and planes, trains in all gauges, from Z-G, slot cars from HO-1:24., Freshwater tanks from 10-175 gallons, with that said, I found a hobby that I really fell in LOVE with, MY REEF. All I can say is yes I have spent a ton of money, but spent it once. And never looked backed.
