Came home thurs... noticed all my xenia was gone and tank was murky.... put my hand in and was like omg.... temp was 96

it killed some rics, tons of dead pods, my blastos, some zoos, and some ducans.. kept 85% of my corals though.. some were totally fine at 96, yes no mistakes, 96... i used 2 frozen ro bottles that were in fridge to help bring temp down and also changed some water out, it actually took a good few hrs for temp to adjust...

marineland heater failed on me.. this is why u always need a temp controller

any good recommendation for a temp controller? nothing crazy, just for prevention

Run 2 smaller heaters instead of one big one. In case one gets stuck on then it will not get as hot....

ya, its a 40 though ;( you know what the funny thing is...... someomne told me to get the marine land stealth out of my qt tank and i saw them doing major damage online as well... mine was working fine.. took it out, replaced it, and a week later my "good heater goes) lol

Oh man, sorry for your loss. I have a marineland heater as well and I don't trust this thing at all, especially after reading horror stories on the net. From what I remembered when I was shopping for a temperature controller, they are not worth the money. Most of them cost the same as entry level monitors- Reefkeeper lite or aquacontroller. I would buy a reefkeeper and use it as a temp controller.

rkl is a great investment, anyone that is at all serious in this hobby needs to have some redundancy with their heating situation, even the best heaters will fail. it is always going to be more money if you don't have things set-up properly to being with. ounce of prevention... i'm glad you learned this lesson while not losing an entire system as many have. Let your story be a warning to anyone reading without a temp controller in addition to their heater.

I had the same problem with when my RKL malfunctioned

here is my thread

I recently switched over to a used Apex and hopefully won't ever have to see my tank at 92 degrees. In my thread, I noticed that some others have had the same experience with the RKL's. Not sure if that happens a lot, but I decided to go with the apex to suspend most doubts. It didn't hurt that I got it for a good price.

i use the Finnex Heater with Digital Controller http://www.aquacave.com/finnex-150w-heater-with-brdigital-controller-1916.html for the price works great but they say after about a year they stop working but that is better than over heating.

rambler, all heaters come with a temp controller. even if it is not a separate part , the dial on the top of a lot of heaters that sets the temp is the controller, those things all fail in time and often fail by losing the ceiling and letting the heater go to the max. You are 100% correct that its better for it to fail than to overheat but the controller I am talking about is something separate....something like a ranco controller or the RKL.

Sorry about your losses!:(

Guys, there is always to worry about especially with heaters. I've had: heater stuck on "ON", heater failing, and the worse which there is nothing that I know off to prevent: heater exploding. Heaters are just a pain.....
