The mag 5 pump that I use in my ATO reservoir stopped working properly yesterday. When the ATO triggers the pump to turn on, the propeller only spins at a slow pace. If I lift the pump out of the water and expose it to the air while it is on and then place it back in the reservoir then the pump will work properly. I took apart the pump to clean it and see if there was something wrong with the propellar and all seems fine. Has anyone experienced this problem?

System is only 45 gallons. I bought the pump as an uninformed consumer years ago. I will have to take a look at the magnet when I get home tonight but it did not look swollen last night when I was messing around with it. What could a swollen magnet mean?

You should reconsider using that pump for an ATO.
You need something more dependable for start ups and something with a fraction of the output. Seriously.
This pump has a max output of 500 GPH. The most favored ATO pump like an Aqualifter has less that 10 GPH.

The idea behind this is to gradually change the salinity of the system with the least amount of shock. If you are dumping in a gallon of RODI at once at 500GPH you will have a different effect as taking a few minutes at 10 GPH.

x2...pump is way to big for your system also every MAG pump I've owned that had that problem it was either swollen or worn impeller.
