I need to set up ATO for my sump. I was thinking of using a basic float valve like the one you would use for an RO unit. Which is what I am using right now in my sump (ro unit direct into the sump).

I was thinking of using 2 brute garbage cans. I will build a stand so that the bottom can (on dolly) can be rolled in and out. The top can would be for the RO water. The bottom of the can would be tapped 2x, one with a valve to dump water into lower can to mix salt in. The second tap would just be for the tubing (same as RO uses), which would then connect to the float valve in the sump. RO tub would be above sump to allow gravity to pull in the water.

Do you think that it will be accurate enough? The only worry I have is that if the float gets stuck on, I will have a never ending flow of water into the sump...

Just go with an Ato controller and a pump. Much more reliable.

Otherwise, if you want simple, use a 5 gal water jug upside down like a water cooler so it burps out the top off water.

I don't want to have to deal with filling it up. I want to keep it so that I need minimal work on it. I am not being lazy about it. My ato is going to run out of my RO reservoir anyway which will be topped off by the RO unit. So I will actually have an endless supply of water.

What kind of ATO would you recommend? I am using a JBJ right now on my Nano. I guess I can just get another one of them.

IMO JBJ is complete garbage. I have a Reef Fanatic and I LOVE it. I modded the sensor bracket/holder and have it held on to my sump by a nano mag float. Always at the correct spot and no fear of it falling off.

Can that ATO be set so that you have both sensors in the sump, so that if the level gets too high that it turns the pump off. Just in case the other float gets stuck???

you can use a dual float one for lower water, and one for upper water.

That is great Rich thanks! That is exactly what I was looking for. Now what pump would you say to get for this? I am going to be making RO in a 32 gal Brute bucket. So the Head will be the height of the pail.

I really need to get this going soon as I don't want my RO unit acting as the top off.

I dont think that the aqualifter has the head that I want. I want to be able to put the pump in the bottom of the RO pail.

I am not going to keep the pail full, I will move the RO float lower in the pail for normal use, then I will just move it up higher to make more water when I need to do a WC. But then again, i will prob just leave it at the top all the time.
