LED vs MH

Slowly putting the pieces together for my new setup and I'm really on the fence whether or not to go MH or LED. I love the shimmer effect of MH's through the water not sure if LED's provide the same result. I'm sure the heat output is much less for the LED's which is great, but if it's not going to yield the same growth levels out of my corals (mixed reef, predominately SPS) then I rather go with MH. Would love to hear people's opinion on the effect and growth yields for tanks utilizing an LED setup.

LEDs will definitely give you a shimmer. I had LPS and softies grow well in a relatively deep tank under a generic 90 watt LED with no problems.

im running an acan 104ac led fixture. there is barley any heat and i have the same shimmer effect as my hqi that i had on my nano. The only thing i dont like about my leds is that it drowns out certain colors.

Opinion free post inc, just the facts...

I've never had MH's, so I shall not comment on them.

I run Ecoxotic LED's now. My tank shimmers like crazy, my electric bill is low, and I have no heat problems.

My tank is young though and my coral collection is small, so take it my facts with a grain of salt. That being said, a tidbit: I did over expose a Caulestrea furcata (Candy cane) by putting it mid level and it bleached out and looks to be toasted. I have 1 SPS, a monti, that's growing gangbusters and it's at about 2/3rd's height. So my LED's seem to be powerful enough to accomplish both of those bits...

All the LED companies are working on the color issue. The best ive seen in person is reeftech, and corallife's new light. I really like the corallife light its a little pricey and at the moment only comes in 4 foot, but i think it would cover a six foot tank. Its $2500. The only other thing would be talk to someone like WINGO, would most likley be a big help. Some of my growth has been good under LED. I have a cup coral that has grown from about an 1 1/2 to about 6 inches round in 5 months, a birds nest about 4 times the size, but my acros seem to be slow. Oh yeah like jedi says i have some monti's growing well.

I just purchased pacific sun new 8 color leds
Switched from 400 watt metal halides
Tank looks better and no more heat
just my 2cents

Yeah the fixture Im getting is 8 ch led across 10 colors for a total of 400w of leds and 4 80w t5's.
