Seems like there is a lot of folks moving towards the minimalist design to their reef tank...aka not jam packing your tank with live rocks.

Other than using Zeovit to account for the minimal amount of live rocks, are there other strategies people are using with success to get enough bacteria colony in the water column to digest the nitrous waste?

I think reef rock as a site for nitrifying bacteria is very beneficial. However, with the advancements in skimmers and nutrient exporting via fuges and other sinks, there should be less need for as much rock.
Thus making a more minimalist tank more available.
Like the watts per gallon rule, I think the lb per gallon rule with start to mean less to a lot of people.
