bio balls?

do any of you guys use bio balls in your sump? please let me know the pros and cons of using bio balls. thanks

The vast majority of hobbyists do not use bio-balls anymore. If the system contains an adequate amount of live rock, the rock will handle the nitrogen cycle ( the same purpose as the bio-balls-i.e. a site for nitrifying bacteria to colonize) and make the bio-balls redundant. Their inclusion just acts as a detritus and nutrient trap often causing high nitrate and nutrient levels.
