Im not sure what benefits come from what size fuges.

In my experience, the time nuisance algae disappeared from my tank immediately followed the time I started my fuge. And my fuge is tiny compared to my tank.
The benefits with any fuge are there, they may be larger with a larger fuge. But anything is better than nothing.
And, if you have LR in the display tank, then the fuge will be much more of a benefit than rubble rock in there.

The benefits of te fuge would be the DSB which he will have no bed in the tank. and then the Macro. A small amount of macro can help a lot and will grown like wildfire.

Controlling levels is the most important (like we all dont know that). But with the LR in the tank there should be plenty of filtration, then with DSB will add more, and then the macro to help control some levels.

I do not think that I will ever make a reef without a fuge.

People want to keep nice tanks and not have to worry about them. There will never be a day that we can't worry about our tanks. But IMO doing the most I can to keep it stable is the most important thing. I have learned a lot regarding all this stuff. People can have reactors up the a$$ and any type of mechanical filtration other than skimmer. But a FUGE is natural, I don't see biopellets or GFO in the ocean. I know that there is no comparison from a tank to the ocean, but a FUGE is the most natural filtration (along with rock and sand). Remember the ocean has SAND on the floor, not glass...... If the ocean has sand then your tank should too. If you don't want it in the tank, you def need a fuge.

my tank is gonna be BB so i was thinking of adding extra live rock in the sump for more filtration but was told might end up hurting me due to stuff getting stuck back there.. was also thinking DSB around 5" but dont know if it would help bc it such a small arae for a 57 gal tank.

assuming the fuge area is 20Lx8Wx12H, (4" sock, skimmer area width of 7", return pump area width of 6"") with a dsb of 6"....20x8x6= 4gal. of sand.
(deep blue 57 gal dimensions)36x18x1.5= 4gal. of sand. that's the same amount of sand if you were to keep 1.5" sand bed in the dt.
i would go with 6"dsb and macro in the fuge area. rock=detritus trap.

His Reef Octopus skimmer ideal operating water level is 5 1/2" With that being said I knew that he would only be able to keep a minimal amount of live rock in 5 1/2" of water :irked: My design would give him a huge compartment to place his live rock in. The water level would also be around 12" or so in the live rock chamber. This chamber will be feed separately from the sump so he can control the water flow going into that chamber. The water will then overflow through teeth into the rest of the sump. The rest of the sump baffles will be set at 5 1/2" which is the optimal water height suggested for his skimmer.

why not raise the skimmer with a platform and raise the baffles up as high as practical (10"?? assuming the skimmer height is 20" and the stand height is >26") so you can maximize the volume in the sump? 27x14x10 + 20x8x2(the fuge section) ~17gal. (less the displaced volume). 17/57 comes to about 30% increase in volume.
this will also leave you about 3 gal. of volume (total sump volume 27x14x12 =20 gal.) to accommodate the water drained from the overflow area when the power goes out or pump shut down for maintenance.
imo i would want the biggest sump possible to increase total volume. priority order... volume-skimmer-macro/dsb

Tom I thought the same. You have seen my setup and that is what I did. But I am not sure how much room he has to play with vertically.
