Two of my Koralia 4 apparently decided to not work properly. Therefor I am looking to replace them. Of course I'd love to get the Vortex pumps, but they are out of my reach, so I am looking once again at the Hydor pumps.

My question is: Are the Hydor Koralia controllable pumps worth purchasing, and can they be ran on any controller or must they be ran on the Hydor Koralia wave maker?
I was told that the evolution pumps cannot be put on wave makers which is why I am now looking at the controllable ones. I plan to run them along side the two remaining #4.;)

Please let me know what you guys/gals think..

PS Where would be the best place to get them from?

You can put the older models on a wave smart but they make a clicking noise. I looked into doing that also.
I have a couple large Evolution 1040s I stopped using when I upgraded to an MP40.
They are 6 months old if you are interested.

Aquarium Village has the wave smart in stock with a good selection of pumps also.

Thank you Thavngr98! How long have you been running the evolution pumps on the wave maker?

Thanks Alfredo! Drs.Fosters & Smith actually have the best online prices.:)

Thank you Imbarrie, I am actually looking at a bit more circulation. Going with the 1400. Wish I could afford the MP.;)

I had 10 different models on various tanks. They do tend to break and when I say break I mean it. I ran my 400G reef with them for 2 years and finally gave up because of various issues, from noise to literally breaking off an blowing the sand all over.

The customer service was ordinary.

I have a magnum 8 that stopped working all of a sudden. I contacted them and they said it was due to Sandy causing electric surge. I replaced the impeller with a working magnum 8 and it worked fine. So they are blaming a impeller issue on Sandy - Way to go.

I have used them for 4 years but will be replacing all of them in time.

P.S ==> They claim to have send me stuff that I never received. When I contacted them they said it was my responsibility to contact UPS.

Enough said?

Sunny, thank you for your reply!
I've had my Hydor Koralias #4 running steady for quite a few years (at least 4), and this is the first time I've had an issue with 2 out of 4. Can't really say that they are bad. My Koralias are not the Evolution nor the Controllable ones, which is why I asked the question concerning those two models.

Thank you Thavngr98! How long have you been running the evolution pumps on the wave maker?

A little over 1 year.

Thanks Thavngr98!

Anyone else with a few years running these puppies on controllers? I have some time before I have to replace them since I have nothing in my tank. Thanks a lot "Sandy"

tagging along....I've been using the modded MJ1200s for years, but they since changed the design and the newer version doesn't accommodate the Sureflow mod..they have their own version which suck so I was looking at the Hydors as well as the Sicce HP Voyager models..so any feed back on either would be appreciated....

Hi Mike, I don't know about the Sicce HP since I have never had one. I can tell you that my original Hydor Koralia #4 PH are/were great! I hadn't had any issues with them until now with 2 out of the 4 that I have in my tank.
The reason for my post is that I am thinking of getting 2 of the "Controllable" ones to replace the 2 that just malfunctioned.;) I can still feel power going through them, but the impellers are not turning.

Hi Awi..it could be that the impeller/magnet just needs to be replaced...the magnets due wear down and don't make strong enough contact to turn..it has happened on a few older pumps I've had..try that first...if they still don't spin or just spin backwards then their shot....

Thanks Mike, I actually thought about the impeller being shot, but can't see how to open the pumps to remove the impeller. I'll go play with them now.;) What's the worse that can happen? So what if I break it.LOL

Love my Koralias. I have had original, Magnum and just got Evolution 1400 that I haven't tried yet. I have three originals that I purchased used. They're old and still going strong. I'm debating whether or not I should try the Evolutions on a timer, maybe alternating every minute during the day.
