It's pretty simple. He has nice corals, he's a very famous and successful reefer so people are willing to pay allot of money for his stuff. Is there a way to identify it, like mentioned before only by knowing who's tank it lived in after Jason's. There is no real way to know. People rip people off all the time in this hobby. It used to not be like this but lately it's gotten pretty bad.
All this being said this is an expensive and not so popular hobby. When I say not so popular I am comparing to other things people do for instance cycling collecting art, stamps etc... Since the hobby is relatively small there isn't as much cash being circulated so costs are up. Plus we are actually getting rare living animals so how big can this really get. I think the hobby being small is cool. People (my self very much included) go through stages where they get addicted. I have phases (going through one now) where I need something new almost every day! Then when you can't afford it you get hobbyist who turn there addiction into a business. they buy a frag and chop it up into bread crumb sizes and start selling it. It's like another very lucrative illegal business. "buy in bulk and chop it up" Some are worthy (Jason Fox, Tyree and a few others) Those guys are famous because they really have special pieces. However most private name vendors these days are full of crap. They put a ridiculous name on everything. I mean you can take a zoo and call it July 4th dynamite and people will go crazy for it even if it looks like garbage. Allot of the vendors I saw at the swap used to come to my house to buy things, now they are big bad boy vendors. And the look on their faces when you walk buy is like an inmate when a women walks by, they are ready to pounce. They forgot why they even got into this hobby now it's all about the Benjamins only from the looks of it they seem to be dealing in Jacksons and Lincoln for the most part. I am all about the little guy and it's awesome they do what they love but don't turn into that grimy LFS owner that will sell you a shark for a nano because he knows he can. Without rambling even more I think the lesson it to buy with your eye that's it. If you like it and want to spend the money on it then buy it. Why buy from Jason Fox? He's worked his way up and now has our street credit. I always laugh when I see threads with a coral and people asking what it's worth. Sure we know what most things cost but that's not what they are worth. All this stuff is expensive if you have to ask then don't buy and f you want to know it's true value then see how much someone else is really willing to pay for it, that's how an efficient market works. I was at a store last week and they wanted 200 bucks for a Favia colony because it was "Ultra". I left and drove to another store where I got the same exact colony only double the size for 100 bucks. I felt like driving back and showing them. Lesson is buy with your eye, that's it. Sorry for the long rant.
