Deep sand bed

So when I started my tank almost 5 years ago I did a deep sand bed 4in deep and I wish I would have never did it. So how do I start taking it out without killing everything?

Why do you need to take it out? Get a good cleaning crew and they will fix it for you

In some parts the sand is starting to turn black pockets.

That's normal, just don't disturb the sand bed.

When i took mine out i made a good amount of water took a 1 inch tube and just sucked it out sections at a time taking time to refill water as i go, then as the water settled in the bucket took some from on top and replaced water. Took a few hours but was easier than i thought. :banghead:

So how many people have deep sand beds? do you feel it give nitrate problems? I ask because I've been getting high readings on my test kit.

i think DBS is just like "alcohol" is good up to a limit, then one time (years) work against you , personally i will go back on BB (i use 6 years) i start to remove sand from tank every time i do water change, i prefer "0" Nitrate and "0" PO4 then nice sand and ......this is my opinion.
