Quick plumbing question about unions

Can a union be installed sideways on a drain pipe?
Or do they have to be vertical?

Either way...its just a coupling. Nothing mechanical.

Not sure ? Leaking? I always installed them vertical but this time I'm going threw a wall and wanted a easy disconnect if needed.

Mike, I have it side ways for 3 years no leaks . Never had problem.

i have a few sideways only hand tightened and no leaks.
i would check the o ring.

If you want self reassurance use Teflon tape on all the threaded areas

the threads are only to hold union together, it seals with an o-ring.

Plus if you put teflon it may not tighten all the way and seal properly... Definitely leave that off and i have unions in both directions. Its not an issue.
