Empty snail shells

Ok, so I bought 12 snails and 12 hermits, put 4 of each in my three tanks. The snails did not survive in my largest newest tank I'm suspecting the water was too cold 68-70,,,(faulty temp probe). Do I leave the shells in there so crabs can swap out whenever they'd like or take them out?

I'd leave them in. It looks "messy" to me which I hate but it's natural. I have some in my tank too the red & blue leg hermits take them as they please.

I leave them in when a crab dies. I've also asked for some spares from my LFS to have lying around my tank.

Every now and again I catch one of my crabs swapping shells.
