painting wood stand necessary?

I am building a wooden stand out of 2x4s and was wondering if it is necessary to paint the wood?

I don't mind having it as just plain wood, but was wondering if it really is necessary to paint it?

I didn't paint mine, as I closed it in with panels, but I did put a sealer on it.

What kind of sealer? I kind of want to get it running and online tomorrow so prefer not to have to wait for dry times etc.

I got a polyurethane and sealer it with that. When I did the canopy on my other tank I stain it and the used polyurethane on it. I'll have to look but I'm pretty sure it was water based.

Polycrylic works better for sealing i think and it only has like 8 hrs for full cure after 4 its orobably good to use though

kyrlon makes a polyurethane sealer im going to use, dry to touch 15 minutes, handle 4 hrs

Actually taking a quick look at my paints, I did use Polycrylic on my stand. I put 2 coats on in no time. I think I used polyurethane on my canopy and it also dried very quickly.

oh yes, I've had plenty of water damage to wooden stands in the past. My iron stand is rusting now and I have to keep using WD40 on it.

Why would you be using WD40? That would be a lubricant, not something that takes care of the rust. You need to get a wire brush and scrap down the stand with it, removing the rust, and then paint it with Rustoleum.

I just ordered some krylon polyurethane, going to hit it with 2 coats for peace of mind.

If your not going to paint it I would recommend using epoxy coated deck screws not the drywall screws as they will positively rust. Or at a minimum fill the holes with wood putty or poly urethane sealant.

I used polyurethane to seal it, now if only I could get the darn thing leveled
