What size tank? If you're going with a canister filter then the Fluval 405 is a good filter for smaller tanks, say up to 90gal, anything larger I would go with an fx5 or fx6. The larger Eheims are also good too. If you want something on the back of the tank then the Marineland Emperor filter is good to use, you can use it with the bio-wheel or not too.

i have had 2 eheims, one i ran on a 30 fresh water for over 10 years. i also had a 2017 on my fresh water 90. great filters with a lot of room for media and dead quiet. now they have the pros that have media trays.

I run the Eheim Wet/Dry 2227, and the Fluval 405 and Fluval Fx5 too, on my large fish tanks. The Eheim are better biological filters where the Fluval are good mechanical filters. I needed to add the Fx5 as the tank wasn't as clear as it should have been. The Fx5 really pulls out a lot of stuff, but it's a pain to clean each month, unless you plan on replacing the filter pads, which is about $20-$25 a month.

I use the fx5 and am very happy with it. You can use whatever media you want with it. It doesn't have to use the one made specifically for fluvial.

I am also using sun sun and very happy with that as well. For the money the sun sun is a better value. You can get 5 sun suns for the price of the fx5. Aquarium Village has the new aqua top which is the same thing as sun sun.

The Fx5 is probably too big for that size tank, so it's best to look at one of the other canister filters. The thing is what type of fish will you have and do you plan on feeding heavy? If you plan on having larger fish, and feeding a lot, then it would probably be better to get a canister filter that is better at mechanical filtration, like a Fluval or Magnum. If you plan on having small fish, like say Clowns and such, then a good biology filter, like an Eheim, would probably be better.

You should look into a HOB filter or 2. They are much easier to clean then canisters and a little more customizable. A a lot of people turn aquaclears into fuges. I use the aqua clear and a aqueon. I like the aqueon more. It has 2 compartments. It provided good circulation and gas exchange. It also has plastic pieces built in for extra biological filtration. You can use the first one for mechanical and chemical and the second one as a fuge and biological. I will try and get you pics of how I have mine set up.

What kind of fish? Are you going to load your tank up with rock?
