your getting brown slime from reef crystals? Thats weird cause i use reef crystals and don't get any brown slime. Are you using RODI water testing at 0 tds?

Here are a few other questions....

How long has the tank been up for?
How big is the tank?
How many and what fish do you have?
Are you running phosban & carbon in reactors?
What skimmer are you running?
What are all your levels (nitrates, phosphates, ect)
Are you dosing anything?

+1 the brown slime probably isn't because of your salt.

What I was gonna say was I switched to ESV just last week from Coralife and will say that I hear you guys saying it's annoying to mix, but I will say that:
1) yes it takes longer
2) but i feel cool like its more mad-scientist chemistry fun for me.

SO all-in-all I dig it, plus I switched because ppl said it's a better product. That I can't yet comment on. It does dissolve fast but I make my water fresh so the stuff has to heat, that's what takes longest for me.

I was using RC crystals and. Noticed a brown residue when my salinity was set too high. Double check it is mixing at 1.026 and shake/mix your bucket well.

I am going to start using red sea coral pro and see how well I like It before I make the extra effort to get ESV.

+1, many people get the 'brown residue' from Reef Crystals...I have no problems with the ESV, and have the mixing down to a science, hardly any 'extra effort'... once the RO water is ready, I can have 60 gallons of salt water in a few minutes.

My salt is at the same level and I was going to do the same try the Red Sea pro but its hard to get even though there 10 minutes away from me Lfs have had problems with orders from them so I'm told but the really don't carry it so there has to be a reason for it

I used to get what your talking about too. Residue coating when I mixed power salts. I got it from using Salinity salt from seachem too. ESV is excellent and crystal polished water. I switched to Reef salt by seachem with no residue.I also noticed build up using H2O salt by DD too.
I have same problem of getting salt. Either the prices are to high or they don't carry my brand. I get it from Docter Foster and Smith with free shipping and good price. Can't beat that...

the brown slime is from rc. I dealt with it for years and talked to many people and the all admitted they had it to some degree. started using rodi water got better but still there, now I use tropical marine no slime and cleaner tank.

Yea I use rodi but it is still there and it just builds up in your mixing container
If you don't clean it it's really a pain in the ***

I also had the brownish foam in my mixing container from reef crystals. The color was more light brown, but it was def darkish.

I use ESV now. No residue at all and it actually mixes faster than RC did.
