Re cycle?

I just downgraded from a 75. Bought new sand but kept some old live rock. I don't have any test kit for ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. However, my tank is cloudy and i had a clownfish die on me. When i was doing the transfer, i kept the rock in a container with a powerhead and a heater. Could it be that the tank is having a mini cycle? or any other reason?

It is going to cycle again but shouldn't be too bad if you used the same water. If new water/new sand then I think a lot of your mature bacteria would be gone. Almost like doing a 90-100% water change. It isn't a good thing. I just did the same thing. New sand, new water so I knew I should let the cycle do its thing.

I'm not sure if water would play as big of a role. The majority of denitrifiying bacteria lives on the rock which seemed to be taken care of with the heater/power head. I agree that the introduction of sand does cause a mini cycle, it's happened to me. When I started my recent tank I had the rock cured in the tank for about a month with no sand in it yet. I added the sand and noticed a spike in ammonia/nitrite the next day. The mini cycle only lasted a few days though.

I'm sure most LFS wouldn't mind testing your water for you.

i did use the same water, which i forgot to mention but i don't think it matters. And I'm not really close to any LFS. I don't have any livestock in there so i will just play the waiting game and wait until the water clears up
