Hi guys,
I just got my Remora Skimmer 1200 and this thing is loud. The tank is in my bed room and the manual stated the noise is louder than normal during the break in period which it is 1-2 weeks.
I doubt this thing can go much quieter after the break in period.
so I may leave it on during the day n off at night unless I have other better options..
any idea?
Thanks

Check to make sure its not the collection cup vibrating against the holding area. I had that problem in the past. Another problem I had was running the pump vertical rather than horizontal. You could buy fittings to run the pump horizontally. Outside of that, it should be pretty quiet after breakin period.

you could do that but i think skimming 24/7 is much better.

can you try and place a cardboard box over the skimmer to muffle the sound a bit? every time you turn the skimmer on and off it will need time to adjust before it starts pulling stuff out. i doubt you'll get any good skimmate if you keep turning it on and off

How can you run the pump vertical? I mean the clearn tubing from the skimmer is facing downward. So the pump outlet goes in that. The pump position is horizontal..

When you said horizontal, do you mean the pump outlet facing up and the intake at horizontal position, correct?

The outlet of the pump should be horizontal (Parallel with your floor) and use an elbow (can be bought at Home Depot, Lowes or other hardware stores) so the clear tubing can connect to the vertical (Perpendicular to the floor) intake of the skimmer. I found that this eliminated most of the noise. Of course you may need a stronger pump but I was using an aquaclear 50. I am sure the Maxi 1200 would be fine.

I agree with Jon. It is better to have your skimmer running 24/7.

Let's wait and see. I hope this thing will get quieter after the break in period.

BTW, what does that elbow look like? Is it a piece of plastic clear tubing?

a cardboard box doesn't have to look like a cardboard box if you use some creativity. there is black contact paper out there. that's what a skimmer is anyway, a black box.
