Need help with my 3" crocea. Have had it for 6 weeks. Within the last 2 days the mantle has receeded more and more. Today it's not openening and the snails are on the shell. Tank Params are stable. Nothing in the tank has changed(flow lights etc.) All fish and sps are healthy. My huge maxima is happy. It's a fairly low nutrient tank if that matters. Don't want to loose him. The foot is still attached, so I guess that's a good sign. Any clam experts out there? Thanks for any help.

If the nassarius smell it, I'm afraid it is too far gone and there is not much that can be done. Sorry.

Ken, this is a very odd occurance. When I saw it on Saturday it looked great. No nuisance algae's in the tank, I didn't notice (nor did I look for) any pyramid snails, no fish bothering it, light was more than adequate. All in all your tank looked awesome.
Like Dean said, please take a moment and specifically check your nitrates and phosphates. I know with the zeo it should be fine, but placate your online buddies and test it.

I sympathize with you, and you should perform all the obvious tests and check for the obvious pests, but don't be surprised if it just crapped out for no good reason--- they do this all too often.

it could be something bothering it cause its new. sometimes that creates a chain reaction by the clam releasing slime n attracted more to bother it. i find quarantine the clam once it looks bother till it recovers can help.

Ken, I don't think they were referring to it being the time because of age (unfortunately some people expire when it's time....at a young age
), but just because of genetic makeup, conditions (don't read into that) or any of a plethora of reasons. I hope all the naysayers are wrong.R
Russ I understand what you're saying. I think Calfo refers to these gus expiring after only a few months in a system for no apparent reason when all else seems healthy. Maybe this is the case. It's foot is firmly attached, so like you I'll be optimistic. Now how long before those tanks are cycled in case I need a new one?

if your snails were in there i'm sure it's gone. it's happened to me. the clam looks fine and then the mantle gets smaller and smaller until one day you wake up and the snails and hermits are having a feast.
