i've decided to redo the rockwork in my 120g. i'm not very pleased w/ it and i know it can look 100% better. after i finish doing the groceries i'll get to work on the tank.

here's pic of the current rock work then:

what i would like to do is make a larger mound in the middle of the tank. if all goes well i'll make some improvements in the sump tomorrow.

out off all the times i've aquascaped(maybe like 10x) this is the first time that i am not happy. and to think, if all goes well i'll be moving in few months and i'll have to do everything all over again

The best way to do it is by draining as much water as you can. Aquascaping in a tank full of water is a tough job.

i've always aquascaped w/ the tank @ least 3/4 full. how is aquascaping in a rank full of water difficult. it actually makes the rocks lighter.

Yeah I've always aquascaped in a full tank minus the water displacement of water from my arms reaching around.

Hey scarf, IDK on what your plans are for the tank but from the first pic when I saw it I thought of making two peaks w/ maybe some ledges and have a velly between the two but going more diagnel from front to back. But thats just my opinion. What were yours thoughts, you said you had a vision ?

i think it needs to be planed ahead of time. i found a model of a reef structure i like and try to replicate it. i like ones with caves,cliffs, and overhangs,etc..
do not settle for a ok landscape. it will evenually make u tear it down. do it once exactly how you want then leave it be.
when i did mines, i had a draft of what i wanted, then tape it next to the tank n model after it. i make sure i was not interupted so i can work in total concentration. i didnt care how long it takes. i wont stop till its done :smile:

update: i aquascaped in maybe 2 hrs and then spent another couple hours properly placing the corals.

pics to come. btw it came out nothing like i had originally planned. all i can say is that it came out 1000X better than i planned.

no rocks were added/removed. as i said i'm very pleased. @ first i started w/ the middle pile then came the pile on the left and then i had an i dea to connect them and then came the pile on the right. this was not @ all what i planned. it sort of developed this way.

there is as much space behind the rockwork as there is in front. it's cool to see all the fish from any angle of the tank. they like to chill in the shaded areas but can still be seen since it's so open.

any comments welcomed. i wish that i'd never have to tear this tank down but unfortunately i will have to in just a couple months. i will try to the best of my abilities to copy this style when i set up the tank again.

Two questions - did you take the fish out to do this as well, or just the corals? And did you use epoxy/pvc/other stabilizing agent, or is this just the result of freeform piling?

i did not take the fish out and i did not take all the corals out. this is the result of freeform piling. i make very sure the supporting rocks are touching the bottom glass and that the other rocks placed on top are very sturdy. i give them a good shake. if the move jsut a bit then i look for a better rock or try to reposition it so it doesn't move in any way.

this is the way i have done my rockwork ever since i started. the top platform allows me to place my sps as close to the light as possible. not to mention that's where all the flow is. the bottom areas are for the lps and the shaded areas under the ledges are for light sensetive corals.
