I am planning on doing some work on my tank this weekend, and it would be a good time to redo my refugium. On my 65 gallon display tank, I have a twenty gallon sump, with an approximately five gallon refugium (18 x 7 x 9).
The original plan for the refugium was to grow cheato, but I have been using it basicly as storage. Right know it is holding rock I removed from my display (to make more room for frags ), as well as some misbehaven hermit crabs.
I would like the refugium to:
1. be a refugium in the truest sense of the word ,a safe place from predation for pods, microstars, bristle worms etc. etc
2. help stabalize Ph swing and
3. reduce nitrates.
(in that order)
Right now it is not doing much of anthing except wasting space. What would you do?
I am thinking I want to remove the rock and break some of it down into rubble (I am talking golf ball sizes). I know that it will trap detrius, but I figure that this is just a food source for a thriving invert micro fauna population. There was a thread over on RC about maintiaing a display with rubble, and I gave it serious consideration when i re-did my tank last year.
On top of that i want to grow a thick mass of cheato. I have water running very slowly though it pehaps 25 gallons per hour.
The other option is to remove it completely.
