As a newb to the site and to the hobby, id like to chime in to maybe offer the prespective of someone in my position.

I think that as a newb on an online forum (and ive been a part of a bunch for a while now) the newb has to get to know everyone before they take their advice. As of now there are only a handful of people that i know, and based on what i know about them i deal with the advice accordingly. But if i get a piece of info from a member that im hearing what he has to say for the first time i would be careful before accepting it and labeling it as "good advice".
I think its the obligation of all newbs to approach scenarios like that. I understand not all newbs are going to think that way, but its what we have to rely on.... unless you come up with that knowledge rating system that was mentioned.

Another major thing that helps newbs pick and choose whos advice to take is by emphasis (like reefman said). If there are 10 replys to a topic, and one says to do X and the other 8 say do Z the guy who asked the question going to take the advice of the 8 people. The one thing im not for is flaming. Its just not right to bash someone who posts something stupid because that will only make things worse. Ive seen countless times where users were flamed for saying something stupid, and as a result of the flame someone reading the thread does the opposite saying that those ppl have their egos involved so im gonna go the other way.....

So far as a member for about 2 months now im absolutly loving it here. MR is a great place. However im a little let down by the fact that i dont know more of you. Most of you are great people and i want to thank you all for making MR what it is.

........ Thats MR in the eyes of a newb

Their post provides so much entertaining value for me, please don't ask them to go away:)

there are so many facets to reef keeping, no one person can be an expert in all of them. a few of us had spoken about having reef badges, similar to what Albert suggested. they would designate which members had sufficient knowledge in one area to be considered "experts" on our site.
some examples would be marrone for fish and fish disease, solbby for biology(a real expert, i.e phd) cali_reef for equipment, spykes for sps i.d and coral disease, these are only a few examples, each person I named knows more than those few things but those are the strong points I've seen.

as for any bad advice, there's no way to stop it. the best we can do is call people on wrong info, hopefully in a respectful manor.

There's been less and less of that as of lately though :sad2: I think i've given my share of bad info also :bigeyes2:

hopefully in a respectful manor.
That reminds me of this....

i never heard so much EDITED i was there when you made an EDITED out of your self that girl that works there did nothing but her job you need to learn how to be a human not an animal

:D

I think the knowledge badge thing would be great =0) its been talked about for a while on a few posts of some way of getting people to realize people with senior member status knows something more than others.

I would prefer...

Learned to post
Posts sometimes
Posts alot
Posts way too much
True lurker

yes, there was a reef chemistry test that Randy Holmes farley put together.
after skimming it I can say I'm no expert yet in that subject :happysad:

tests would be good, but who would create them, and what level would they be. We have some real intelligent people on this board, there would have to be a curve, or different levels for each "knowledge badge" or whatever you guys want to call them.

...

I dont think its neccessary to ---> or <----. Whats important is for members to be knowlegeble not only to give advice but also to keep their own reef healthy and prosperous.

yes jhale, there would be..
What I was thinking the test is going to be the same however, it would contain easy, common sence, and advanced, super advanced questions....
