Is Hair Algae contagious?

I bought a rock with a lot of purple mushrooms, however it also has plenty of hair algae. My set up is free of any hair algae and i am wondering if the ones on the rocks i just got will spread onto my other rocks. Any advice/comments is appreciated.

I also got a rock with mushrooms and lots of algae. My yellow tang started to eat it at first and then got bored of it and then like a week later it went away. So i dont think its contagious, thats my personal experience

I am glad to hear that.. i was debating whether to put the rock in my sump for the meantime... it is in my display now....but i will have to observe it ...

give it a week and it will slowly start disappering. If you dont have any other algae growing in the tank then it shouldn't be a problem.

If a piece breaks off and lands somewhere on another rock, it will grow and spread. Ask me how I know:ANYWORD: .

As long as you have a ballanced tank with low nutrients the algae will not spread, if you have hi nutrients it will definitely spread like NRa said.

It should be ok like said above, you could get something that eats it as stated above as well tangs and some crabs love it.

If conditions are right in your tank, the algae won't spread. I had my first hair algae outbreak in nearly 10 years, not bad, but it was still there...and frequent water changes didn't help at all...I finally realized that it was probably because my lights (PC) were old....thanks to the holidays, 2 kids birthdays at the same time...not to mention their tuition....I couldn't afford them right away, and it was awhile before I could finally replace them (after my tax refund)...I got them only about4-5 days ago...the change in appearance of my tank was dramatic, and I am already befinning to see a reduction in algae growth. and in your sump and in your display are the same water column. in a QT tank wouldn't be.

It was already in my tank when i asked the question... i had no choice or else i would not have put it in my tank (long story) thus i had to ask the question... since you are a mod.. kindly close this thread... most of the reefers gave me the answers i was looking for.. thank you!

You always have a choice. why don't you have a QT Tank? put it in there. It doesn't have to be a tank. It can be a rubbermaid/tupperware with some water, a heater, and a powerhead.

It will spread with the right conditions.
I would scrub it of with a toothbrush and not chance it.
DO you know if it's regular hair algea or byropsis if it's byropsis then I wouldn't want that in my tank.

It will not grow if you have good parameters in your tank . it will die out. If you have good paramters dont worry about it. Its been a few days now what do you see? See less of it, or did you remove it by any other means. Let me know i want to know.

This question is a moot point now because my tangs took care of the algae....thanks to all that offered their ideas...
