I had to setup a QT tank rather quickly, unfortunately I didn't have any media from a cycled system so what can I do to keep the ammonia from going through the roof ? I have a simple bio wheel filter with a foam pad / charcoal in it - that's all...what do I do ??

Thanks !

do you have like a dirty filter sock or filterpad from your main tank? that'll have atleast some bacteria on it :scratchch

Unfortunately no :( I did however put in a piece of cured LR @ 4 lbs (it's a 5.5 gal tank) only housing a 2 inch percula clownfish for @ a week...

When I had a QT tank set up thats all I had. A piece of LR and a power head. Of course its better to have a nice cycled tank ready for action but if you don't I guess you have to make the best with what you have at hand.

Bump!

Here is a guy trying to do the right thing and use a QT tank. This post should be flooded with advice:smile:

Craig hooked me up the other night with a carbon filled sock that was in his sump for a while loaded with bacteria and also some of his tank water ;)

When you setup a QT tank you don't have to worry about putting in any type of biology filtration. What you want to do is fill up the tank with water, you can take water from your main tank. Place in some type of pvc or rock, so the fish have places to hide. Then add either a filter, air pump with air stone or a power head so you have water movement and more important water surface breakage. Final put in a heater and you now have a complete QT.

Also you don't want to feed a lot, this will cause an increase in ammonia. The fish don't need to be feed all the time and should be fine with being fed every other day. Also you can do small water changes each week.

Remember a QT is not only for seeing if a fish has a disease but to give it some down time, from being moved around a lot, before being place in the main tank where it could be attack or stresses from the other fish.

Like Marrone said, PVC for hiding spots in the Hosp/QT tank.

Keep this in mind, you may have to medicate that QT tank and if you do the LR will get saturated with the medication traveling into the display tank. Also it's a lot easier and less stressful (for you and the fish :)) to catch the fish without getting snagged on the LR with the net or as a hiding spot for the fish.
