250w too much for a Nano?

Is a 250 watt HQI over a 20 gallon tank overkill?

Im not a lighting expert but I am the one who sold ya the light and I wasent aware you were honna put it over a 20 gallon tank,lol.Thats why I sold it in the first place.I had it over my 24 gallon ap but it was way overkill.I had to keep it like over a foot and a half away from the water .

If you cant find a use for it ill refund your money.Also did you recive the mounting hardware?

lol. Thanks, I received it, and thanks for the kind gesture, but originally I bought it to run over something else... lately though, I've been thinking why not try it on my 20...

So it was overkill in your tank? Were your acros starting to bleach?

hagging a light 18" over a tank without a canopy does not serve it's purpose for me. your going to get too much light out of the tank. i think a 150 DE is more then good enough. and you can drop the light to 8" over the tank and not have as much of a heat issue and would serve it's purpose, lighting the tank, not your room. my 2cents

Was gonna say the exact same thing, until I came across this post.

Couldn't agree with Dave more. Running a 250watter 18inches above a tank is just a waste of time. Run a 150 like Dave said and you'll be more than fine and you can keep it way closer to the surface of the water and have a ton less light spill out.

FYI I run a 20g with a 150DE pendant. It's more than enough.

I have the 150 sunpod over my 24 pod and it's great. I have seen mods on nano reefs that had 250's over the nano's and pods as well. In my opinion it's what you want to keep and if you properly acclimate the livestock in your tank to the higher lighting and how you handle the heat problem.

I have it 8" off the top of the water.. I have tried it with out the fan and temp jumps to 80 with the fan 76.. with pumps inside the tank...

corals not bleaching but the heat issue was a prob i down graded to 175 watt and its much better.

I have a 12 G aquapod, and I use a 150W MH over my tank. Anywhere between 8" to 16" (not that I use a ruler) but everything in my tank is happy. Lots of growth on EVERYTHING in my tank. There might be bleed off, but putting a canopy only makes sure that you don't see the light, unless the whole canopy was lined inside with reflecting material, is not going to make much of a difference on what reaches your tank. (I know... for some of you into optics and light quality, yes the inside of a canopy will reflect some of the light back towards the center, but not to the point of making a big difference)
That is, if you believe that light behaves as a wave as opposed to a particle, in which case we need to start talking quantuum optics here.

I say, go for it
Just be aware of the heat issues that you might have
