Can someone tell me how to set up a qt tank?

starting with should I take water from my tank?

power heads?

filter?

lighting?

How much to feed them while they are in the qt tank?

What type of medication to use in the qt tank?

How long to have them in there?

How big should the qt tank be for 2 clown fish?

I have a mandarin goby, diamond goby, and 4 chromis along with the 2 ich infested clown fish should they all come out of my display tnak?

After the fish get better and put them back in my display tank , the qt tank has to stay running or do I take it down and put it together if the fish are sick again?

Can someone tell me how to set up a qt tank?

starting with should I take water from my tank?

You can take it from you main tank or make up fresh water. In you case, since fish in your main tank have ich, I would use freshly made up water.

power heads?

filter?

Basically all you need is something to move the water around and give you water surface breakage. You can use a power head, filter, air pump or even a protein skimmer.

lighting?

None is needed, but you can keep a small light near the tank or have some indirect light hit the tank.

How much to feed them while they are in the qt tank?

Try not to feed that much as it will create ammonia and could cause more problems. If you do feed make sure you vacuum out any left over food. Also if you feed a lot you'll need to do water changes more feq.

What type of medication to use in the qt tank?

A QT tank is used to check and see if a fish has something, and give the fish some down time. So if the fish doesn't have anything you don't need to treat the tank. Once you see that it has something then you'll need to determine what it is and then treated with the correct medication.

How long to have them in there?

2-4 weeks is good, the longer the better.

How big should the qt tank be for 2 clown fish?

A 10gal tank or rubbermaid container should be fine. Put in some PVC or rock, doesn't have to be live rock, so the fish has a place to hide.

I have a mandarin goby, diamond goby, and 4 chromis along with the 2 ich infested clown fish should they all come out of my display tnak?

Since you don't want to treat the main tank you should take out all of the fish and treat them in a hospital tank for at least 4 weeks. Also you need to leave the main tank empty, no fish, for 6-8 weeks to kill off the ich.

After the fish get better and put them back in my display tank , the qt tank has to stay running or do I take it down and put it together if the fish are sick again?

You can take down to QT and just set it up when you need it.

Thanks a lot marrone. Do you also recommend feeding garlic extract?

It does seems to help to feed your fish garlic, but now a days most prepared food have garlic in them. So it doesn't hurt to add some to the food. You could also get fresh garlic and mix it into the food.

Do a search on the board, using the search forum pull down button, and you'll find a lot of posts about Garlic, as well as posts about QT.

Check the water levels daily and be sure to do daily or other day water changes, In my experience the nitrite levels immediately shot up to a dangerous level, even with small water changes. I ended up taking fliter media from my main tank (already with estrablished bacteria) and use it on my filter. If you dont get some kind of bacteria in the water it will spike.

This was my experience with a QT, but others said it wasnt necessary, to establish bacteria, but otherwise the nitrites were always dangerously high
