Well then..that makes total sense! Be sure to check if you are permitted to collect it and transport it back here before you get yourself thrown in the pokey..
I'd wait until just before you leave, and as JH said, it should be fine.

Ulva (sea lettuce) lasts a maximum of 36, certainly no more than 48 hours in a ziplok bag. I bring it back all the time from LI...you don't need water as long as its damp. I usually collect it the night before I go home or early that same day, and keep it refrigerated until it goes in the tank. Extra will go into other tanks with fewer herbivores- in a tank it can last for 2 weeks easily. As for the red algae, it depends on the type- Gracillaria, which can also be brownish or yellowish, has the same conditions. The red sheet stuff, looks like red sea lettuce, starts to break down as soon as its out of the water...I have never been able to bring it back intact, even after only about 2 hours. Brown algae's like kelp can last a long time out of water, but nothing I have will eat it. Take care, Eric

I don't think you can legally take any meat and vegetations out of Hawaii unless it has been pre-inspected.

But I know people who collected ulva, shrimps, and snails there and brought them back successfully. The snails and shrimp were kept in small water bottles and the ulva were stored damped in plastic take out containers, all of it were in the check-in luggage and when asked at the airport, just say they are take home food your family on the island gave you :D.
