vinegar is safe. soak it in vinegar and then rinse in water. even if a few drops of vinegar end up in your tank it wont be detrimental.

Just curious, soak in vinegar or vinegar diluted with water? Just soak them or let them run in the vinegar? If let them run or soak in vinegar, for how long?

You can do half water half vinegar. Thats how I do it and let it sit overnight. If the pump isn't stuck for calcium buildup I'd let it run. Plug it off in the morning, lightly brush it with an old toothbrush, rinse, and put it back.
