I believe a 1.5" drains approximately 1,500 gph.........Mag 9.5 1,900 gph. If you add an additional drain you probably need to add an extra return. Also why do you want soo much flow for an anemone and clownfish tank?

Hey there duke, Taking a shot in the dark, is the Mag 9.5 for your 110?

I have a 93 gallon bow with the same pump, and it's worked well, but it is a bit of an overkill. The tanks return is a 3/4" bulkhead which limits throughput, causing back pressure (head pressure), which in turn causes the pump run hot, and decreases the useful life of the pump.

If you want to continue to use the 9.5 then instead of drilling a second hole, perhaps you should consider splitting the return with a wye splitter, adapter which will help dissipate the pressure, and increase the amount of circulation to different area's of your tank. The farther you have back pressure in your plumbing the less wear you will put on your pump. In other words, the valve @ 1' from pump is greater than if you placed that same resistance at 4' from the pump.

Like Dean stated, the primary purpose of the return pump is return water from sump to tank, primary turnover should be handled by powerhead's. IMO

Beyond being too strong for a straight inline flow the Mag 9.5 runs at 95 watts per kw/h. A pump that runs @ 60-70 watts range will consume less energy, run cooler, and perform it's intended function. Over the course of the year(s) the pump will pay for itself, and the tank will remain cooler which will potentially save you even more $$.

Hope this makes sense, needless to say. I will be replacing my pump to Eheim 1260 eventually. More expensive than mag's but there supposed to run cooler, and very quiet, and less wattage in a fews years it will pay for itself.

Good luck with it. I can take a picture of my loc-line setup if you need the visual. LMK

Here's plumbing pieces for the return. HOF's sells the stuff on here at great prices, item 1 x f, and 2x b, 1 x A i believe

Mikey

the Mag 9.5 is for his new 30g tank that is why I said that he's better off with a Mag 5 but even that is a bit of an overkill.

you can put a valve on the output to increase head pressure and lower the flow...It will not damage the pump and you will be using less energy as well.
