Hey guys,
I'm in the process of setting up my new 55g. I've been searching for a skimmer and it's hard to find something that'll work. I came across the ASM mini G and thought it was perfect. So i was wondering what do you guys think of it?
The footprint of where i can put a skimmer is 7"Wx14"Lx18"H,
Thank you guys very much

ASM Mini

Hello,

It should be Ok depending on your bio load. The first thing you'll have to do though is change the pump. I'm getting ready to set up a tank using this skimmer in my sump but I replaced the pump with a Ocean Runner 2500 with the mesh wheel mod :approve: The supplied pump isn't too strong and really doesn't produce much.

Good Luck:biglaugh:

Thanks!
I always heard good about the ASM skimmers but then i asked and everyone was putting them down... I found the mini for 99 bucks so a pump upgrade is in my budget :) I'll probably do a few mods like the gate valve and cup drain. But i'm scared to do some of those ones that you drill holes in the body... Oh and for the bio load i don't plan on it being high just a few fish mostly corals.

Hello,

Skimmers are often a touchy subject on these forums. It's a matter of personal preference. You ask 10 different people and you get 10 different responses :D If it works for you than it's good! The small footprint works out nicely. The mods are very easy. The most important and the only thing that's a must is to upgrade that PUMP! That's usually where the power lies in all skimmers. Basically, how much water is it processing in any given hour. Check the "For Sale" threads and you'll usually find some good deals as well.

Good Luck:biglaugh:

Asm

I Had A Asm 3 Modded On My Last Tank And Loved It, Getting Ready To Get A Mini Myself, And If It Is Like The Asm 3 You Only Need About 2" Above The Collection Cup To Remove It, It Screws Off

Custom King, I am thinking of doing the mesh mod myself, I like to know where you purchase the material from. I found a site where they sell smaller piece 39" x 2 yds for around 25 bucks. This is still way too much for just doing this mod. LMK. Thanks.

for mesh mods......i am using 3M industrial/professional strength scuff pads on my octopus skimmer....now the pump is pulling too much air...i had to put a valve on the air tube and dial it down.......the scuff pads are like the enkemats most people use for thier mesh mods....this stuff is very coarse and stiff.....i found it at home depot....and its only a few bucks.....or u can do a five finger discount.:skull:

Wow that's pretty cheap. Well i hit alittle bump i went and picked up a 10g and the only way i can get it in there is pulling the stand out and sticking it in from the back... So i'm wondering what to do if i ever need to get it back out!

Waht kind of stand is it? On my 55 AGA tank I had to mod the back and cut the center support and renforced it with 2 2x4s so I could fit a 20 long back there.

When I had my 38 gallon, which was 12 in in depth, I had to break the trim of a 10 g tank sump so it can fit in the cabinet stand, and even doing so I needed to stick it in from the front thru the back and turn to get it in.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure my uncle gave it to me when he upgraded. it's 23" on each side and a big brace that runs from the front to back. The door is 12" i'm guessing and it's 12" deep. and i have it 2" from the wall but there is no back it's all open on the back
