Hey guys how's everyone doin. Haven't posted in a while. I gots a question about the proper use of garlic in aquariums. I would also like if a few experienced reefers chimed in.From what I understand garlic contains a comound called allicin, which is hailed for its anti bacterial and anti fungal properties. Hence the reason why we feed it to fish in their food immedietly after adding it to their food. Another thing I understand is that the only way allicin is produced is when garlic is cut, pressed, or damaged because the enzyme allinase acts on the alliin converting it to allicin. Now that being said when allicin is produced it degrades rapidly and is no longer useful. So would there be any benefits what's so ever if garlic in it undamaged state is placed in a media bag and placed in the sump of a tank.Would it make finiky fish eat? Will it inhibit any bacterial or fungal pathogens?Basically will garlic in it whole be of any use to treat disease or famine in our tanks?Oh I forgot to ask will it have any adverse effects, such as it rotting and causing nitrates? Or anything like that.
