yesterday when i checked mycal it was 420. today in the morning its 500 . how did that happen . my alk is 12 and its the same as yesterday.my sump has evaporated under the line i aways want it. all i did ad was kent marine concentrated iodine. i added a cap like they said . thats all i did. and i just checked my cal right now while the lights is off, does that throw it off a little?

Never dose anything you don't test for. Adding a cap to your tank is fine but only if your iodine readings are X if they are Y then that might be too little if they are A then it might be too much. So yes by adding that cap you could have thrown the tank out of whack.

Stop adding stuff to your reef for a week or so,& see what it does.Then calculate the drop in parameters ie: ca,alk,mg.I said before,sometimes the best cure is no cure at all.

And FWIW,I never added iodine to anyone of my reefs,just CA,ALK,& MG supp.

I was told by the LFS to add iodine because I have shrimp who need it for molting. Is this true or something to get people to buy more additives?

P.S. I have been adding a capful of Iodine every other week and my two shrimp are huge.

Iodine is very dangerous if overdosed in a reef tank. I hope it was not Kent lugol's solution you were using because that dosage would be overkill, I had a 360gal total system and only could add 14 drops of the solution. When it comes to iodine i would add no more then 2/3 of the recommended dosage...
