Pierce - Any suggestions on a pump? I have the gen-x 30 on my MTC HSA-250 and fully open it feels like a bit too much. The water level is pretty high in the neck but still has 1"-2" of foam breakdown space (where the neck gets dirty), this is with the water exiting in about 7"-8" of sump water. I was thinking if I up'd the pump that it would be too much for the skimmer and flood the collection cup. And at the same time I was thinking a smaller pump and use of the exit gate valve might be good. The t2 does about 550 @ 9' and from what I found on the internet the gen-x 30 does the same. I'm not sure if the gen-x figures are wrong because I couldn't find a pump chart.

Timber - not sure what I need yet but thanks.

Velocity pumps are high by-pass mag coupled impeller pumps, the floating impeller head actually rides on a ceramic nob shaft, it needs a lot of "by-pass" water to keep the pump cool. This design makes a very quiet running pump but the friction from head pressure on the ceramic creats a lot of heat and attracts Ca. Typically, I had to clean the three I was running every few months or the Ca built up will stop the impeller. They don't work well in salt water tanks.

Marine Depot list the GenX 30 as comparable to Iwaki 40RLT. It can be a bit much if you don't have a long run to the beckett. I think a 30RLT may work better, but I would just throttle the GenX 30 down and not buy another pump.

Thanks Cali,

I'm really doing this for noise, trying to get it down as quiet as possible because the tank is in my bedroom. My other option is the blueline 40 or the panworld 100px but from what I've read they are somewhat noisy too. I'm going to remove the fan on the gen-x and see what happens. If I could get the panworld silent by removing the fan I would do that also. But if its a choice between noise and cleaning the pump every other month, I'd gladly clean the pump but glad to know what the issues will be.
