Does anybody run a UV on there system? If so do you run it full time or part time? Is there any specific research or experiments discussing if they do more good then bad.
Thoughts>?

I don't use one, but imo they are good for fish, not so good for corals. that is they control parasites and disease that can attack fish, but they also nuke the corals bacteria they use. In general I think the disease control outweighs the bacteria, so it gets my vote as a useful reef tool.

i had it running for two weeks and it made a HUUUGE dent in the algae. I had it running for disease prevention so the algae control was just an added bonus I hadn't counted on

Hair algae? I've been running a coralife twist 9w in my 72g bow front for 3 years and im still fighting with this hair algae. My tank measurements are normal (nitrate <15). I brought a phosban reactor last week and im still waiting to see a difference. Could it be possible that the 9w is too small for my tank?
(bulbs changed every 6 months, feed 2 to 3 times a week, 25% bi-weekly water change using Kold Steril II system, in case anyone was going to ask:eek:)

I've been running a coralife twist I got secondhand on my 55g. Not sure the of the wattage though. However, it's cut down on hair algae dramatically after only a fortnight to the point where there's hardly any left and I see white rock I've never seen before.

Ok, what am I doing wrong. You guys are having a shock and awe campaign against hair algae, meanwhile I've been under occupation by the hair algae regieme. I just have no luck man!!! I bet if I wanted to propagate hair algae, there would not be one spore in my tank. Omg...I just can't win!!! LOL.:banghead:

:funnypost

it can be a tough battle. have you ever checked the phosphate level of the water coming out of the kold steril unit?

I seen the acans in real life and they look amazing.

Possible a sea hare too for the hair algae thing, and the 40 watt UV on a cycle, perhaps 1week on/3 weeks off. to give the best of both worlds

its my opinion that the coralife twist suck. Plus 9 watt from coralife is not enough. I had one it sucked. Tried a different company more wattage for my 90. Now everything IS wonderful.
