Importing into the U.S.

Just wanted to see peoples experiences on bringing in livestock from another country. Not looking to do anything illegal as these animals are not endangered by any means; they're just not too accessible in the states. Do I need a permit or anything besides filling out this form? http://www.fws.gov/le/pdffiles/3-177-1.pdf

BTW, looking to import some cuttlefish eggs if anyone was curious as to what I wanted to import.

They do have a short life span as do most Cephalopods but if I could have someone send them in for a reasonable price I wouldn't mind trying to raise some.

I don't think you'll have much luck finding "good" cuttlefish eggs locally. Sometimes I see them for sale locally but they usually have the milky look which means they are not going to hatch.

You definitely can find captive born as Randy mentioned. Do you want to try and hatch them yourself? or Are you just looking to keep cuttlefish any way you can get them?

Well, since the life cycle of the cuttlefish is so short I don't want to have an adult cuttlefish for only a couple of months, so I figured hatching them would allow me to raise them from hatchlings...Plus the price for an adult cuttle is almost twice that of a juvenile. However if I find grown cuttlefish for a reasonable amount I would be willing to buy them.

I once tried to blackmail a prominent member of the world bank to bring me a lemur but it didn't work out.

The rate at which the eggs would hatch, it may make sense financially and responsibly to buy a CBB juvenile cuttle. I don't think it is easy to hatch cuttlefish eggs. Not only that, if you import eggs from out of the country you have no way of knowing if they are fertile or even the benefit of a gurantee if something goes wrong.

That's just my opinion. You know I am not one to try and force you down one path or another. If it was me, I'd feel better buying a juvenile cuttle from a US breeder even if it costs a few extra bucks.

I know you do your research and will make the right decision based on what you can handle. Which reminds me, Should we get back on the raising mysis train?

Yeah, after weighing the options importing is just too tedious with no guarantee that they will even hatch. I will probably start of with a couple of juvies and work my way from there.
The seahorse had more babies this morning if you want some more; as for live mysis - the ball is in your court at this point, let me know when to pull the trigger.

Why don't we place and order for live mysis and rotifers. I was planning on setting up a system for rotifers already and the mysis shrimp tank is all ready to go. Send me a PM and we can discuss the details.

guess what guys, I had a swarm of mysis growing in my frag tank. I have no idea where they came from, but with nothing to eat them I guess they multiplied. the frag tank is now housing a giant skimmer, I have not seen the mysis since the skimmer went in.
