What MR Members Power Head of Choice!

I know everyone is gona say the big price one, But what ones are people useing and working well for them.

Also how much power should I be looking for in a power head how much movement I dont want somthing to strong, what would be too strong....

What's your budget? There is a suitable powerhead for most budgets.

Ive been told that the Maxijets with the modkit work very well and are probably around $30 for both the powerhead and kit. I heard they outperform the Koralia's.

Besides that I would select a Koralia above tunze for a average sized setup

MaxiJet 600 W/ MOD has been working very well for me....inexpensive and reliable.

for clarification it is spelled "Koralia"

the 4 is 1200 gph. hardly too powerful for a 6' long tank.

my tunzes are 3175 gph each, and i have 2 of them in a 3' long tank.

I like the maxijets with the mod because it works well, great output and low store cost.

But I'm switching to Koralias as my main power heads (visible ones) because it looks much better than the maxis, and has great performance without a mod. I didn't want cords hanging over my tank.

I've got one koralia 4 and going to get a koralia 2 for behind my rockwork in a 3ft tank

Koralia's flow is nicely spread out so it's softer and delivers to more places. To do that they have to be powerful which they are. And you gotta love the design and the magnetic holder.

Koralia = wider gentler linear flow.

Tunzies are a mix between a reg maxijet and a vortec. For the amount of work and cost needed to set up multiple tunzies on a controller your better off buying a vortec. But thats up for debate as always, you have the vortec people and the tunzie people. IMO they are ugly.

Vortec = more efficient and better maxijet mod description. Backdraft coupled with the programs for pulse modes and wireless links between them beat out anything out there.

Thats the lineup, you can mix in the tunzie nano's after the koralia price wise. They deliver a nice small stream with good output and are in a swivel bracket. Less intrusive than the koralia's.

The think i don't like about the vortecs are the noise and the fact that they can not be pointed anywhere but perpendicular. The vortec is much noisier than the tunze. If you can hear a powerhead, it's too noisy for me. Also, the tunze deco rocks hide them nicely. I think a tunze in a matured deco rock is less of an eyesore than the giant prop protruding from the side of the tank. JM2C

Also with the newer tunzes, you can buy the safety connector and hook it up to any battery for a power loss backup. Safety connector + Car battery will give you much more run time than a vortec w/ battery backup and probably costs less.

I have tunze 6045 and hate it. The reasons

1) It was almost double the price of the Koralia 4 and not as good flow.
2)The holding clips break on 99% of them (you'd think with the praised german engineers, they can get a stronger plastic).
3) Mine starts sucking in instead of out sometimes, causing some fatalities

Overall the big tunze's might be better for large tank but the smaller ones have crappy craftsmenship and overpriced

Just get the maxi with modkit, good flow, cheap and smaller sized then the other ones with comprable flow.

But of course if you have the $$$ go for vortech, i dont so I went with the other recommended ones

Issues #2 and #3 have been corrected and will be taken care of for free w/ an email to Roger at Tunze USA.

As for #1 I cannot comment on a comparison. I like the bigger tunzes better for any size tank

I've used all of them also.
The Koralias are crap IMO-used a 1 and 3 and while the flow is alright, aesthetically they look terrible.
MJmods move some serious water but are eyesores
The Tunze nanos are a mix bag--they will break but they will also be fixed by Roger. I have purchased 4 6025s over the last 1.5 years and I've gone through literally 8 or 10 motor blocks and the same numbers of C clips. That being said, all the newest ones have been rock solid except sometimes they still dont start properly.
The Bigger Tunzes are very nice IMO, directional flow, no noise with great controls but they are big and pretty ugly. They also cost a good deal of money.
The Vortech is also great. Minimally intrusive, great flow and controls, but like Wes stated not directional. IMO they dont need to be. Also, my tank background is black and its very very difficult to even see it back there. They are surprisingly noisy though, even with the Gen2 magnet.

Anyway I am now using a mix...Vortech on one side, 2 nano streams on the other, and a MJmod across the back. I'll be replacing the nano's with another Vortech soon...

Forgot to add, if you havent seen what Tunze has coming out over the next year, you need to read up!! (mini wave box, nano-sized regular streams, etc)
