I have a 46G and just got two coralia hydor2 ~600gph. I have these at opposit ends(one poining up one down) along with about 300gph coming out of my sump at a 45. From what I read and have been told this is good flow. My problem is there just seems such little flow by feel coming out, but what do I know? Is this plenty flow? Also how much bigger a tank could I go with two of these? Kind of glad I got two 2s and not two 1s.

Thanks

Well I have heard the rule is 10 gph per gallon but 100 gph isn't really enough for a 10 gal sps reef so I would say whatever works for you is what works.Try this, intentionally make alot of micro bubbles go into your tank, this way you can look for dead spots and try to adjust/add flow where necessary.

Also, did you account for head loss from the return?

Hello there,

Don't be fooled by the Koralia GPH rate...It's an evenly dispersed flow not a single blast at 600MPH...I don't know...for a 46G two of those should be fine...depending on what corals you keep...SPS...no...I would suggest adding another 2 or maybe a 1...I am running two Koralia 1's in my 10G SPS tank, plus an AC50/Fuge. But for Softies and LPS those two you have should be fine.

Good luck!

There is not set equation for flow. You have to be the judge whether or not it is enough. If your coral looks closed up then you have too much flow in that area. Keep adjusting until you find that all of your corals are happy.

All is good. After some analyzing I think this is plenty, though I probably still have some dead spots, nothing like before. I can judge by my zenia and it seems I have plenty of flow.

Frags that haven't attached? So if I were to put my leather that has all but disintegrated loose in my tank that would be good?

He means that some people put frags that haven't attached into a small container with rock rubble, and put that into a low flow area to give them a chance to attach.
Due to aquascaping folks often have areas of their tanks where the flow would be considered low.

As far as a leather that has all but disintergrated..you might want to remove that so that it doesn't pollute your tank.
Do you have a pic of it?

http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/coral-farming/42440-leather-coral-help.html

KathyC this link points back to my original issue, which everyone and I mean everyone told me everything will be okay. A few weeks ago it appeared to be rotting at the base as it mostly detached itself from the rock. After discussing w/ my lfs they said to maybe frag it or cut off the bad part. Did that and a few of the frags literally disintegrated in a matter of a week while a few still look horrible but look to be hanging on.

I think that this coral has been dying since day one it's just not giving up. I am soo upset w/ my lfs that just keeps spinning me in circles that it is my parameters, which even after they measured said were GOOD. Any input?

Thanks

hmmmm...is the coral the color it appears in the pics? Pinkish? or it is more of a tan color?

Do you have a more recent pic? (sorry!)
Are you still putting iodine in the tank? If so, I'd stop doing that unless you have an Iodine test kit as you can OD a tank with it!

Another question..did your Koralias come with the flow directors on them? ( a piece that goes on the output end ..about 1/2" long and it has a snail guard in it?) If not, I have them and can send you a couple. The cause the flow to be less disbursed and more 'directed'.
Some folks point their p/h's directlay at each other from opposite ends of the tank ..and when they 'hit' they cause a more random flow in the tank.

Yeah I have the flow directors, but thanks. I kind of have the flow that way and its pointed at my bow so that gives it random. I can tell by watching the particles in the tank.

As for my leather. I haven't added much iodine. The coral is a pinkish color. Posting pics of my tank and what I could get of the leather. As you can see by my other corals there doesn't seem to be a problem with my water.

Definitely not dead! :)

I'm assuming the pieces you have aren't attached to anything right now?
If so...have any rock rubble? Can you build a small circle of rock (like you were making a campfire..lol) closely around the base of the coral..you want the coral to be standing upright when you do this. It should attach to at least one piece in a couple of days. If it attaches to more than one piece..DON'T rip the other piece off, but instead glue that rubble together.

At that point I'd move it a few inches higher up on the tank (looks to be on the sand now) in a place it will get moderate flow.
What kind of lighting do you have and how deep is the tank?

I have tried building a campfire but they always work their way out somehow. It's been a week or two now and no attachment. It's plant lighting in my refugium and I can't really move it up higher without building something. Is this all okay?

Glue yourself a campfire? lol :)

Why is it in your fuge???? It's never going to perk up with that lighting!
Next thought...move it to your display tank and put a semi heavy-ish (got that?...semi heavyish to the coral..not you! lol) rock over the end of it and let it attach that way. But it definitely needs more light!

Okay going to try some aquascaping sometime this weekend. I have plenty of rubble so shouldn't be a problem. I had it in my refugium becuase of flow and didn't want it to blow away. Thanks for your help!
