Collecting trip saturday

Getting together with some ppl to go collecting on saturday. We will be meeting at 2pm in the big parking lot at Oak Beach. If you would like to come u can just pm me or just show up.

a little bit of everything. Here's what i have caught so far this year.

For eye Butterflys
baby lookdowns
sea horses (all returned they are CITIES listed)
Blue spotted Clornett fish
banddtail puffers
alantic blue tang
doctor tangs
baby cobia
pipe fish
african pappano
baby short big eye
pilot fish
permit
orange file fish
pigmy file fish
groupers
snowy groupers
lionfish
spiny box puffers

What did you do with them after you caught them? That's a lot of fish.

Hi is their a reef off the beach their ? what kind of structure holds the fish ? can you take some underwater picks ? Thanks Jason just curious

Always wondered about this , I though CITES was for international trade; how would local collecting apply?

I am interested in going. I have a car and would be willing to take people that wanted to car pool that live in astoria.

I have never been to Oak Beach. Aside from the big parking lot are there any other landmarks I should look for?

What should we bring.. Buckets...beer...mask and fins?

I only keep the fish i wish to keep all the rest or the one's i know won't live are returned right away. I also donate to Jones Beach Research Center, Atlantis Aquarium, and Coney island Aquarum

There isn't much structure where we will be going today. It's a lot of eel grass that's right next to the mouth of the inlet. The perfect habitat for baby tropical fish. Sorry i don't have a underwater cam but ill try to make some vids from today's trip.

just yourself And anything u wish to eat or drink. And a bucket to bring home what ever you wish to.

Local wholesalers and LFS can not carry them unless they have CITES paperwork. I know a few store's so far this year that got in a lot of trouble carrying these seahorses and they came in and caught them.

No there really isn't much of anything there. If you go about 2 miles more pass it you will hit Robert Moses crossway and 2.3 miles you will it captree state park. If your heading from the city.

Just bring something to bring the fish home with u. Food, Drinks, towel, ect ect. If you wish to bring mask and fins u can. we will be sine netting.

I would guess that it's because they can't be proved that they were caught local. As we all know there are a lot of shady ppl in the trade.

We did very well. Here is a run down of some of the more interesting things we caught.

4 baby cobia
2 baby lookdowns
1 baby moonfish
9 seahorses
1 short big eye
12 blue spotted cornett fish
8 pilot fish


The vacation was GREAT. Can't wait till i go back down again in Dec. I gotta upload the pic's and vid's online when i get a chance.
